Teller of Fate
Sixth Movement: The Fate of Stars
Chapter Fifty-Nine
* * *
The Wanderer could move freely in Aions with physical laws so deviant from those familiar to the inhabitants of Glyph that their very existence would be impossible there.
The Crawling Chaos well knew the subset of dimensions that were the home of the White God. He had found it during the dark ages preceding his engineering of the Templar Empire. Carefully exploring, he sought to know the nature of the creatures in it.
In the White God’s kin, there was nothing to reason or bargain with or threaten. The rulers of the Shining Empire had had nothing with which to fight or even affect the White God. With all their fantastic power, they had failed for thirty thousand years against IT. Finally trapping the White God had cost them everything.
Now those former demigods of the Pleroma were all but extinct. He, the Wanderer in the Wastes, the Crawling Chaos, knew the nature of their enemy as the Templars never had. While the White God devoured the Spire, the Wanderer would overwhelm them all with an army of ITs kin. By the time anyone suspected he was killing the Lord of Entropy, it would be too late to stop him.
It was time to unleash his army.
A fine seam appeared between the Wanderer’s covered paws. He slowly moved his hands apart, and the gash became a vulviform opening. After giving parting halves of the sphere a terminal outward shove, the Wanderer removed his hands.
When the opening was wide enough, he stepped through it.
Beyond was Nonspace.
To the living, it would have looked like the Nonspace the Wanderer had just left, save that its texture was different. To a living being, moving through this Nonspace would have felt like walking through invisible spider webs.
The Wanderer couldn’t feel the strands themselves as he walked, but rather the tugs as each one resisted its passage before finally snapping. For the Wanderer, used to transitioning between sub-Realities, the analogous sensation faded to imperceptibility in a half dozen steps.
Behind him was the sphere that contained the Thirty Aions and infinitely many more teaming with the kind of life that had so troubled him down billions of years. The tear would stay for a time.
Now that he was here, the Wanderer needed to find the sphere the White God had been drawn from and summon legions of its kin to overwhelm the pathetic rabble that dared oppose the Wanderer in the Wastes.
A living being would have said that the sphere was a short distance away. The orb that was the Wanderer’s destination was a brilliant white in colour, thin jagged scarlet lines skittering across its surface.
What he needed to do was different than breaking through to another reality.
The natures of Aions, galaxies, systems, and even worlds in the sub-reality he needed were quite different from those of the one that the Pleroma had thrived in. The Wanderer needed to find specific equivalents to locate the world the White God had come from and open a tunnel through to this Nonspace.
When enough of the entities came through, he would simply stop holding the passage open and lead them back to the Nonspace occupied by Glyph. Shortly thereafter the feasting would begin. He briefly considered the sphere before him, then began his search.
After a period of what passed for time here, the Wanderer found the right world and opened a long winding tunnel to the Nonspace he currently occupied.
Memory was something else the Wanderer had no truck with, at least as the living understood it. No need was there for the chemical-electrical dance to quantize sensory data for later retrieval, a process he knew to be woefully inefficient and distorting.
With absolute certainty, the Wanderer knew everything he needed to know to crawl the wastes in search of decay for his master’s table.
When he created the channel down which a single red entity shot, smashing into his being, and overwhelming his ancient and near indomitable mind, the fact that he had approached the wrong sphere would forever go without explanation.
